Valencia: The Movie/s

Chris Vargas and I also contributed to Valencia, an omnibus film based on Michelle Tea’s 2000 novel of the same name. Headed by Michelle and producer/filmmaker Clement Goldberg, the project brought together twenty-one queer filmmakers who each contributed a 5-7 minute short based on a chapter from the book. Participating filmmakers included Cary Cronenwett, Cheryl Dunye, Silas Howard, Michelle Lawler, Samuel Topiary, and Courtney Trouble.

Chris and I contributed Chapter 20 to the film. Our video uses revoiced found footage and DIY visual effects to “cast” Angelina Jolie as Michelle, reusing footage from her many iconic crypto-dyke roles of the mid-1990s: Gia, Foxfire, Girl Interrupted, and Hackers.

The film premiered in June 2013 at Frameline 37: the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival and toured other festivals throughout 2013 and 2014. The film won the Jury Award for Best Experimental Feature at the POLARI26 festival in Austin in 2013 and the Golden Reel Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature at Reeling 31: Chicago LGBT International Film Festival in 2014.
